Work Permit Canada
There are multiple types of work permits available, and the right one depends on your qualifications and current status. Common types include:
- Graduate work permit: after graduating from a designated learning institution in Canada, applicants can generally apply for a permit valid anywhere from 1 to 3 years.
- Closed work permit: issued following a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) tied to a specific employer.
- Bridging work permit: extends an applicant's ability to work while a permanent residence application (or provincial nomination) is in process.
Basic requirements
- Currently residing in Canada holding a valid study or work permit (or your spouse/parent holds one).
- Graduated from a Canadian college or university.
- Hold a temporary resident document valid for at least six months.
- Have an in-process IRCC permanent residence application, where applicable.
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
International students who successfully complete an eligible academic program can apply for a PGWP, allowing them to stay in Canada temporarily to work after graduation. The PGWP can only be issued once, so students aiming for permanent residency after graduation need to plan carefully around it.
Minimum requirements
- Completed a degree, diploma, or certificate from an eligible designated learning institution.
- Maintained full-time student status for every semester of the academic program (with limited exceptions).
- Proof of program completion, including an official letter and transcript.
PGWP eligibility rules by field of study and institution have changed in recent years, so this may not be the right choice for every student. Talk to us before you finish your program so we can plan the sequencing correctly.
Caregiver Work Permit
If you have nursing, caregiving, or nanny experience and want to work in Canada, you may be able to file for a caregiver work permit.
Minimum requirements
- Meeting the relevant language proficiency criteria.
- Relevant caregiving skills and qualifications.
This permit can also connect to permanent residency later through the Caregiver Program.
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch employers on a closed work permit?
Generally no. A closed work permit ties you to the employer named on your LMIA-based offer. Changing employers usually means your new employer needs to obtain a new LMIA and you need a new work permit before starting the new job.
How many times can I get a Post-Graduation Work Permit?
The PGWP can only be issued once in a lifetime, so it is worth planning carefully which academic program you use it for and what your next step will be, whether that is permanent residency or another permit type.
Do I need a job offer for a work permit?
It depends on the permit type. Closed work permits require an employer-specific job offer and LMIA. Some open permits, like certain bridging permits, do not require a specific employer.
